ITEC Diploma in Sport Massage

Prior Learning: Holistic Massage level 3 or Sports Massage certificate or diploma level 3

The main aim of the ITEC Level 3 certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is to gain practical and theoretical skills for people who work with Sports people or in active leisure, including osteopaths, physiotherapists and massage therapists. The purpose of this specialist qualification is to enrich practitioners´ understanding of advanced anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to the application of sports massage.

It will provide learners with advanced palpation skills, and knowledge needed to analyse posture and range of movement.  It will also provide practitioners with a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in sport and active leisure.  Practitioners will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to implement  future treatments.

Definitions and concept of Sports massage

  • Standards of practice
  • Health and safety
  • Legislation
  • Workspace specific preparation
  • Consultation and consultation form
  • Contra indications

Advanced anatomy, physiology and pathology for:

  • Injury management
  • Injury prevention
  • Pre-existing conditions

Sports specific techniques to include:

  • Friction/cross fibre
  • Compressions
  • Neuro Muscular Technique
  • Muscle Energy Technique
  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation
  • Soft Tissue Release
  • Connective Tissue Massage
  • Taping
  • Active and passive stretching
  • Observation/assessment
  • Range of movement tests
  • Instability tests
  • Postural analysis
  • Palpation techniques on:
    • Muscles
    • Origins and insertions
    • Ligaments
    • Joints
    • Landmarks on the body

Treatment evidence

  • assist in the proposed sports events presented by the school
  • 5 case studies (5 clients treated 3 times)

Dates: The following weekends from 10am to 6pm

  • November 3rd and 4th 2018
  • December 1st and 2nd 2018
  • January 12th and 13th 2019
  • February 9th and 10th 2019
  • March 2nd and 3rd 2019
  • April 13th and 14th 2019
  • May 4th and 5th 2019
  • June 15th and 16th 2019
  • July 6th and 7th 2019

Payments:

  • Yearly registration fee: 75 euros.
  • Course fee:  9 weekends, 150 euro per weekend (or 1215 euro if paid before starting date of course)
  • ITEC exam fee (optional): 200 euros

Materials for the practical classes:

  • T-shirt provided by Naturaclass
  • Long white or black trousers (uniform style, not legging)
  • White or black full-flat closed shoes and socks, without logos
  • 3 large white towels

Exams and certification:

For the National Certificate in Sports massage, approved by FENACO:

  • Theory exam: one hour 50 multiple choice questions
  • Practical exam: 1 hour with oral questions.

For the International ITEC exam for Diploma in Sports massage level 3 (optional):

  • Practical exam: 1 hour (assessment of injury, chosen by ITEC examiner) and demonstration of appropriate sports massage techniques, with oral questions
  • Theory exam: 50 multiple choice questions
  • Demonstration of class work, treatment evidence and case studies

The ITEC exam will be organized in September 2019.  Dates are depending on availability of the ITEC examiner and will be published in April/May 2019
